I’ve written today’s poem about the call to preserve our light to navigate the dark news of the world. Cinders can transform to light and empathy can be a superpower if we train it:

The Rain Dance of the Lightkeepers
Drenched in a balmy cascade of
emerald drops flicking off leaves and trees
into a puddle in the
curious palm of my upturned hand
so abundant it overflows
from the tips of my hope-drinking fingers
I went to the forest to
cope with a world on fire
and as I lay bone-weary on a rock
lungs depleted from the smoke ash
news of the morning,
I was caught in a dance from
soil to sky
A gargantuan surge of water pumped up from a tree
and curved into a stream of diamond vapor droplets
thick and faceted
a kaleidoscope of colors in the light
that sphered in an endless waterfall
to cleanse and purge my worried soul
I remembered before the world went on fire
learning that a single tree can
create 1,000 liters of water a day
and billions of trees release flying rivers
that sustain the world
Do lightkeepers feel deep and dark
because they transmute soot to life?
The drenching dance of the rainforest showed me
as I rose from my rock and
frolicked with light and love that
spanned a thousand galaxies away
