I’ve written today’s poem about overthinking.
When there are large decisions to make, placing a hand on the heart and listening can reveal a new world of answers that overthinking cannot.

Spiraling
It’s written in ticker tape
in an endless
spiraling circle
down and around
my tired mind
Questions somersaulting
like chess pieces
backwards and forwards
an overstimulated checker board
of black, gray, and white possibilities
Does a heart know the answer that
the mind does not?
It thumps from left to right
and sizzles when happy
quiets to a whisper when at peace
and throbs with longing as wide as the sky
How can I trust my heart when I
know my mind so well?
It’s studied and surveyed
read and asked questions
solved algorithms and geometry problems
with flying-high colors
Now which do I trust when the
stakes are so grand?
I close my eyes and silence the avalanche of thoughts
place a hand on my heart to reveal
a new world of answers that
overthinking cannot
It’s time to make a decision
surrender and listen
While the thinking brain helps me to survive,
it’s the ever-present heart that knows how to give me life
